Commissioners Decline Petition to Make Wayne County 'Second Amendment Sactuary'

By Sam Miller
During this week’s meeting of the Wayne County Commissioners a pair of citizens petitioned the Commissioners to designate Wayne County as a “Second Amendment Sanctuary” County. The Board declined, citing jurisdictional issues. Chairman Brian Smith expressed his agreement with the request, but said that any declaration of the sort would not be binding as the Commissioners are administrators, not legislators.

Smith: "For us to try to legislate from a position that is not a legislative position is just giving you lip service. It is just pretending like we're making a difference by passing a resolution. We have all sworn an oath to uphold the United States Constitution as it is written."

Smith went on to suggest that any concerned citizen speak with elected legislators at the state and federal level.
