Community Raised Over $16,000 for Seniors During the Pandemic

May is Older Americans Month and Wayne County recognized the occasion this week. As part of the proclamation, the Wayne County Area Agency on Aging reflected on the challenges of the past year, and more importantly the generosity of the community coming together. During the height of the pandemic and shutdown last year, the Agency on Aging started the “Sponsor a Senior” program where residents and businesses could donate money to cover the cost of a senior’s meal being delivered safely to them. Within the first five days of the program it had raised over $3,000. Beyond monetary donations, there were also numerous items donated including pet food that was distributed to seniors with animal friends alongside the normal meal distribution. Total donations to the program to date has reached over $16,000.
