As we near the end of March, one of the highlights at Wayne Memorial Hospital has been recognition of Social Work Month. The 2021 theme is “Social Workers Are Essential.” The past year highlighted just how essential Wayne Memorial's social workers are, providing support during the pandemic to individuals and families grieving and isolated from loved ones. Social workers offer a lifeline to many in our community – from protecting abused and neglected children to providing mental health and substance abuse disorder treatment to helping veterans and hospital patients acquire needed services. Wayne Memorial’s eight social workers, who all have at least five years’ experience in the field, describe the past year as the most challenging any of them had ever faced. Department Manager Mary Burgio-Terpak,the social work manager for 25 years said this group has the strongest advocacy skills she has experienced in the field of medical social work. This past year also saw the department change names, from the Social Services Department to the Social Work Department. It reflected generally the education of the employees, who all have master’s degrees in social work.
