PA Department of Corrections Increasing Security Measures for Legal Mail

By Sam Miller
The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections is implementing increased measures to increase safety for incoming legal mail. Following the pandemic and a number of incidents where Correctional Officers were exposed to smuggled drugs. As of March 1, 2021, all mail received at any State Correctional Institution that is to be treated as privileged must contain a control number issued in advance to qualified senders by the DOC, including mail from courts. The control number process that has been in place for over a year was required for attorneys sending legal mail to inmates, but not the courts.
