Pike County Correctional Officers Trained to Help Aging Inmate Population

By Sam Miller
The Pike County Reentry Coalition, the Pike County Area Agency on Aging, and the Pike County Correctional Facility recently teamed up to deal with a looming health issue among the inmate population. Increasingly the inmate population across the country is growing older, with some estimates placing 1/3rd of all U.S. prisoners above 50 years old by 2030. Older adults require specialized care, particularly with dementia patients. To that end, the PCCF staff completed a Dementia Friends Informational Session conducted by Pike’s AAA Executive Director Robin Skibber, who is a Dementia Friend Champion, a designation provided by Dementia Friends USA. New PCCF staff members will complete informational sessions on an ongoing basis. A Dementia Friend is a person who has learned what life with dementia is like, and how to use that knowledge to help patients. Those interested in Dementia Friends Informational Sessions can contact Skibber at [email protected] or 570-775-5550
