Police Department Files Suit Against Honesdale Borough Over Staffing Concerns
Honesdale Borough is accused of unfair labor practices following a recent ruling by the Mayor regarding the Police Department. The Honesdale Police Officers Association filed suit last month after a long standing safety practice calling for a two officer response to incidents was eliminated. In a January 25th memorandum Mayor Sarah Canfield informed Police Chief Rick Southerton of her order, siting the low staffing level that precludes a full complement of officers per shift. The following week an officer responded to two separate domestic disputes alone, with back up from State Police at only one of the incidents. Fortunately there were no injuries, but Chief Southerton requested the two officer response safety provision be reinstated. The unfair labor practice charge was subsequently filed days later.
